What a Ski Patroller Does
Medical First Response and Rescue
- Respond to accidents
- Assessment and treatment to injured or ill guests
- Incident scene management
- Transport of the injured or ill patient via toboggan
- Accident investigation
- Maintaining medical equipment and rescue gear
- Providing dispatch service for emergencies
- Mountain Search and Rescue
Safety and Maintenance
- Ensure and promote mountain safety
- Avalanche mitigation
- Assessing the condition of runs before opening
- Maintaining the resort’s boundary rope lines
- Clearing debris from the trails
- Fixing broken signs and marking obstacles
- “Sweeping” the mountain at the end of the day
Guest Relations
- Routine patrolling of runs

- Educate guests in accident prevention and proper use of lifts

- Assist with Special Events
- Assist Terrain Park Crew, Lift Maintenance and Snow Sports School as necessary

Qualifications and Training
OEC Hybrid (online & in-person classwork)
The course is designed for persons with minimal to no previous medical training or background.
The overlying mission and purpose of the OEC program is to provide a standard of training to meet the medical and educational needs for the NSP patroller and other NSP affiliated outdoor recreational organizations.
OEC teaches how to perform safe and effective patient care, stabilization, and extrication of injured persons in outdoor environments.
Training consists of:
1. Self-paced online chapters to provide subject matter knowledge.
2. In-person classwork to provide hands-on practical skills.
OEC Challenge
Designed for doctors, nurses or WFR (minimum 72-hour course)
To successfully complete the course, the required OEC Skills must be mastered and demonstrated prior to sitting for the final written and practical evaluation.
• Written: 100-questions: passing grade of 80%
• Practical: 4-skill stations and 2-scenarios. Demonstrate proficiency on all Critical Performance Indicators (CPIs) and at least 80% on the remaining skill items.
OEC Modified Challenge
Designed to ensure that EMTs and Paramedics are prepared to function as Outdoor Emergency Care Technicians within the unique outdoor environments encountered by National Ski Patrol (NSP) personnel.
Candidates for the OEC Modified

Challenge must meet the following criteria:
1. Hold current certification as an EMT or Paramedic.
2. Provide proof of EMT or Paramedic state licensure.
3. Complete any preliminary assessments required by NSP prior to beginning the OEC Modified Challenge.
4. Before being certified they must show that they have a current Professional Level
(BLS) CPR certification.
* Complete an assessment, candidates will demonstrate proficiency on all Critical Performance Indicators (CPIs) and at least 80% on the remaining skill items to deliver emergency medical care with competence and consistency in alignment with OEC standards.
